The Race to Build a Bike

The Build a Bike for Kids event
                                                        2-3 hours, 6-45 participants

                                                        Picture
Working with a local community centre we do some pre-event planning and find children that are need of a new bicycle.  The number of children (and bicycles) depends on the overall size of the group.

The events participants are in race to work together to build several kids bicycles while sharing only one set of tools.  The group will be divided in to teams of 4-5 each receiving one bicycle.  The teams must build their bike in co-operation with the other teams.

The teams will work together to get all of the bikes built by the event end time.  At the end we have the adults attempt to ride the bikes across a finish line.  We can even have the children (with parents permission) and a representative of the community centre, present at the event and even help in the assembly of the bicycles.  We will also have a competent bicycle mechanic on had to ensure all the bikes are put together safely and properly.  At the end of the event the bikes are presented to the kids in need.

This is a good feeling event that requires great teamwork and forgiving ones need to be overly competitive with each other and work toward a common goal.   Groups ultimately bond as they have worked together to reach a “good deed”.
