Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers for your next Kattuk expedition.

Planning & booking

How do I check dates and availability?

Visit your chosen tour page and its dates and booking section. While the live booking calendars are being prepared, contact Kattuk to confirm space and arrangements.

Where can I download a tour brochure?

Each tour page has a Download Tour Brochure button in its Plan your expedition section, including Cape Breton Air & Sea, Iceland and both Sable Island tours.

Are payment and cancellation terms the same for every tour?

Terms vary by expedition. Review the booking terms for your selected tour and contact us about any questions before reserving.

How do I know whether a tour is suitable for me?

Read the activity and preparation information on the tour page. Tell us about any mobility concerns or other requirements before booking so we can discuss the terrain and experience with you.

What should I pack?

Bring layers and suitable outdoor footwear. Follow the packing guidance for your particular tour; conditions and baggage allowances vary. Contact us before travelling if you need clarification.

Sable Island

How much can I carry?

Please pack light: aim for a bag weighing no more than 10 lb (approximately 4.5 kg), with an upper limit of 15 lb (approximately 6.8 kg) per guest, including camera equipment and other items you bring.

For Sable Island flights, please contact our office before booking if your combined personal weight and baggage weight exceeds 230 lb (approximately 104 kg). Include clothing, footwear, camera equipment and all bags in your estimate.

This is not an exclusion or an automatic restriction on joining a tour. It allows us to plan the aircraft’s weight and balance with the flight operator and review suitable departures with you. The total load includes all guests, guides, baggage, lunches and equipment. All guests must provide accurate weights when requested; final flight loading is subject to the flight operator’s approval.

This guidance applies to Sable Island tours. Cape Breton flight allowances vary by aircraft and route; please follow the instructions for your selected tour.

How much walking is involved?

The helicopter expedition involves up to 10 kilometres or more of walking without assistance on beaches, dunes and horse paths. The plane tour also requires comfortable walking on sand. Read your selected tour’s mobility guidance and contact us to discuss suitability.

Do I need to keep a weather backup day free?

Yes. Guests must remain available for the scheduled departure and its designated weather backup day. Check the arrangements for your selected departure before making other travel commitments.

Where can I compare the helicopter and plane experiences?

See the helicopter expedition and Day & Sunset by plane pages for transport, duration, inclusions and prices.

Cape Breton Air & Sea

What does the expedition include?

The Air & Sea journey includes a guided helicopter tour from Halifax, a private guided Zodiac expedition, picnic lunch and the inclusions listed on the tour page.

Can the route or schedule change?

Yes. Times and routing are approximate and may be adjusted for weather, wildlife activity and sea conditions.

What should I wear on the Zodiac?

Bring outdoor clothing and footwear that may get wet. Waterproof Zodiac jackets are provided when required.

Cape Breton Highlands Heli-Hiking

Is this one long hike?

No. This expedition includes three separate guided hikes, with helicopter travel between locations. Each walk typically lasts 45 minutes to an hour, with time to pause, take photographs and enjoy the scenery.

Where do the hikes take place?

The planned hiking stops are above Pollett’s Cove, on Meat Cove Mountain and at Money Point. Landing locations, the order of stops and routing may change with weather and operational conditions. See the Heli-Hiking tour page for the planned journey.

How fit do I need to be?

Guests should be comfortable walking on uneven outdoor terrain and have sure footing. Sturdy hiking footwear is important. Please contact us before booking to discuss mobility concerns, hiking suitability or helicopter boarding requirements.

What should I bring, and are washrooms available?

Bring layered outdoor clothing for cool, windy and exposed conditions, sturdy hiking footwear, sun protection, a water bottle, snacks, your camera and any essential medication. Cell reception is limited or unavailable in the Highlands. Washrooms are available at the terminal, and guides carry a wilderness washroom kit.

What is included, and how do I get to the airport?

The tour includes return helicopter travel from Halifax, three planned guided hiking stops, experienced local guides, lunch and bottled water. Airport transfers can be arranged through your hotel; they are not an included general hotel pickup service. Final meeting and departure arrangements are confirmed before travel.

What happens if the weather affects the trip?

Weather and landing conditions may change the route, hiking locations or schedule. If weather prevents departure, Kattuk will check whether the following day is available as a backup date. A backup departure is subject to availability.

Cape Breton Air & Jeep

Where does the helicopter land, and where does the Jeep tour go?

The helicopter lands at Big Intervale in the Margaree River Valley, where local Jeep guides meet the group. The guided backcountry journey includes river stops and scenic lookouts, including Cape Clear, before the return helicopter journey. See the Air & Jeep tour page for the route and highlights.

Will I be driving the Jeep?

No. Experienced local drivers and guides lead the 4x4 exploration, sharing their knowledge of the valley and stopping for scenery, photographs and lunch.

How physically demanding is the tour?

The Jeep portion travels rough backcountry roads. Guests should be comfortable with uneven vehicle travel, boarding and leaving the helicopter and Jeep, and walking on uneven ground at stops. Please discuss mobility concerns or other requirements with Kattuk before booking.

How long is the tour?

Plan for approximately 10 hours. The schedule begins with departure from downtown Halifax at 7:15 a.m. The order of stops and timing vary with weather and backcountry conditions; your final meeting arrangements are confirmed before departure.

What is included, and are airport transfers provided?

Return helicopter travel from Halifax, guided 4x4 Jeep exploration, experienced local drivers and guides, river stops, scenic lookouts, lunch and bottled water are included. Airport transfers can be arranged through your hotel; they are not an included general hotel pickup service.

What should I wear and bring?

Bring layered outdoor clothing, comfortable sturdy footwear, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, snacks, your camera and any essential medication. Binoculars are useful. Highland conditions can be cooler and windier than in Halifax.

What is the price?

From $3,750 CAD per person + HST. Contact Kattuk for dates, availability and arrangements for your party.

Planned return to the Halifax terminal is approximately 6:00 p.m. The helicopter picks you up at the Normaway Inn at the end of the day, avoiding a return Jeep journey to the original landing area. The return flight also refuels at Port Hawkesbury. Times and routing depend on conditions.

How many pools will we fish?

The day can include visits to up to six salmon pools, with fishing for trout and salmon as the season and conditions permit. Your guide chooses suitable locations for the day. The number of stops and catches cannot be guaranteed.

Do I need a fishing licence?

Please arrange the appropriate Nova Scotia licence before travelling. Salmon and other freshwater species, including trout, have separate licence requirements. You can find official online application links on the fly-fishing tour page. Confirm your tour date and intended fishing with Kattuk before purchasing a date-specific licence, and carry your licence while fishing.

Do I need to bring fishing gear?

The necessary fishing equipment is provided. Please discuss your experience, equipment needs, mobility and any wading requirements with us before booking. Bring layered outdoor clothing, protection from rain and sun, and essential personal medication. We will confirm footwear, clothing and baggage arrangements before departure.
